I have not tried this with an empty scene, but I will have a go.

I have since had similar problems to the above with the Decimation command (on the few times I have tried); frozen screen/keyboard/ ...

Just to add that the freeze-up occurs with any attempt to access `materials', whether through the menu, the material box, or the material button (the round red blob on the top toolbar).
